Pakistan’s search for a foreign coach has hit a wall with former West Indies captain Darren Sammy out of the race to become the next head coach of the national team and former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson out of the race.
Sammy turned down the approach from the West Indies PCB, saying he already had a contract with the board as the head coach of the West Indies white-ball teams. He returned home after rejecting the Watson Pakistan Board’s offer on Saturday night.
An informed source aware of the developments said senior PCB officials had detailed talks with Watson during the PSL matches in Karachi and offered him the head coach position.
“Watson had initially shown interest, and had put forward certain financial and other conditions to accept the offer,” the source said.
“But after the board Watson’s financial demands more or less accepted, the Australians were not happy with the details of the package being proposed to the Pakistan media and leaked to social media.”
The Australian politely turned down the offer, insisting that given his prior commitments in the IPL and major USA leagues as a commentator, he wanted to devote more time to his young family in Sydney.
The $2 million annual fee PCB had reportedly agreed upon was for Watson.
Lahore PCB from April 14 is now expected to make interim arrangements for the national team to oversee the five-match home match against New Zealand in Rawalpindi and a training camp in Kakul from March 25 to April 8 before the T20 series.

Coach Pakistan Cricket Team Refuses by Shane Watson
Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson has reportedly rejected the cricket team’s offer to become Pakistan’s white-ball coach. Watson was offered a US$2 million per year contract by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
While some news reports suggest Watson rejected the coaching job due to his commentary commitments, it is understood the Australian was dissatisfied after details of his coaching contract were leaked to the media.
