Joe Root and Ollie Robinson dominated the first half hour and India were looking weak at that time. The partnership for the eighth wicket between Root and Robinson reached 102 runs from 163 balls, with the latter making 58 runs from 96 balls.
Jadeja finally got success for India in the form of the wicket of Robinson, another wicket for him in the same over. Jadeja took four wickets because immediately after that the wicket of James Anderson fell. Root remained unbeaten after scoring 122 runs out of 274 and England were all out for 353 runs.
Earlier, Akash Deep made a memorable start in the first session by demolishing England’s top order on day one, giving India the upper hand. The spin duo of Ashwin and Jadeja launched a rapid attack before lunch, further strengthening India’s dominance.
England found themselves in trouble at 112/5, but Root and Foakes, with a resilient partnership, steadied the ship after lunch, ending the session without losing any wickets for the first time in the series. Their partnership got past 100 runs, and before tea was over, Siraj’s Foakes and Hartley were out in furious spells, the momentum swinging back towards India.
In the last part of the first day, Mohammad Siraj helped his team by taking important wickets. He dismissed Ben Fox after scoring a lot of runs together. The aggressive ‘buzzball’ style of batting was put to rest by Root and Foakes and their resistance to India at the end of that season Very disappointed and his last remaining review was burnt by Rohit Sharma for an LBW decision against Foxes.
Earlier, fast bowler Akash Deep made a dream start to his Test career, taking three wickets in the first six overs and putting England in further trouble after electing to bat after the toss. England eventually lost half their batting lineup in the first session with Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin taking one wicket each before lunch.
Akash Deep replaced the rested Jasprit Bumrah and remained virtually unbeaten in the early part of the session. In his second over, he dismissed Jack Crawley but he overstepped, giving the batsman a life. After uske he immediately took the wickets of Ollie Pope and Ben Duckett and uske bad broke the off stump of Crawley.
It was a legitimate delivery this time, and Crawley had to walk. England captain Ben Stokes had earlier said that spinner Rehan, who has been the leading wicket-taker for them so far in this series, has gone back home due to personal reasons and will not return for the remainder of the series.
